While countless people gear up to witness the first total solar eclipse to span the continental United States in 99 years, Royal Caribbean prepares for a historic celebration of the event. Come August 21, the cruise line’s ship Oasis of the Seas will be the only place on earth to see Bonnie Tyler and DNCE frontman Joe Jonas perform a never-before-heard duet of iconic ‘80s power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
As the ship and its guests sail toward the eclipse’s path of totality to commemorate the solar event nearly 100 years in the making, the international first lady of rock will join multi-platinum selling band DNCE as a musical guest for this exclusive concert on the Total Eclipse Cruise.
Royal Caribbean is pulling out all the stops for it: A custom menu featuring pan seared moonfish (served with pickled radish, white bean fleuron, butternut squash and beet purées) and the Night & Day Soufflé (with both chocolate and vanilla soufflé); themed cocktails such as the Moon Dust (rum, ginger beer and lime), the Cosmic Cosmo and Eclipse Sunrise (both twists on timeless recipes); eclipse-themed trivia, space activities, science enrichment lectures and presentations—not to mention the much-anticipated concert.
This will all culminate in the main event—about two minutes and forty seconds of total darkness as the moon completely covers the sun. The ship’s upper decks will serve as the perfect setting for this unique experience at sea, and each guest will be fit with complimentary NASA-recommended viewing glasses.
Viewers almost anywhere in North America will be able to see at least a partial eclipse, but it’s the 70-miles-wide path stretching from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina, that will be in the path of totality—where the moon will completely block the sun’s rays.
The bucket-list event on board Oasis will kick off a seven-night cruise that takes guests to several destinations throughout the Eastern Caribbean before returning to the ship’s port in Orlando (Port Canaveral).
