When the Great American Eclipse makes its way across the continental U.S. and the Atlantic Ocean on August 21, 2017, Royal Caribbean guests will have the opportunity to witness the celestial phenomenon—99 years in the making—while at sea. The cruise line is hosting the seven-night Total Eclipse Cruise to mark the event, featuring a viewing party and live concert by multi-platinum selling band DNCE; along with a surprise guest.
“When we were invited to headline this once-in-a-lifetime event, we didn’t think twice. What could be more out of this world than witnessing a full solar eclipse at sea?” said DNCE frontman Joe Jonas. The band, which includes bassist and keyboardist Cole Whittle, guitarist Jin Joo and drummer Jack Lawless, will perform hits like “Kissing Strangers” and “Cake By The Ocean” on board Oasis of the Seas.
The seven-night sailing celebrates the rare solar event that last crossed the U.S. from the Pacific to the Atlantic in 1918. When Oasis of the Seas sails into the eclipse’s path of totality (the 70-mile-wide swath in which the eclipse will be visible), guests will have the ultimate chance to see the moon mask the sun for several minutes of total darkness—in the middle of the day.
For safe viewing and to take advantage of potential Instagram-worthy moments, Royal Caribbean will provide every guest with special eclipse viewing glasses on board. In addition to the exclusive concert and celebration, guests will also enjoy eclipse-themed activities including science lectures, exciting on board entertainment and parties, and a special food and drinks menu created just for the occasion.
Departing Orlando on August 20, the ship will head to the Eastern Caribbean to visit ports of call in St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and The Bahamas. “We’re stoked about coming back on board with Royal Caribbean to put on a lights-out performance with a very special guest,” Jonas said. “It’s beyond exciting to be able to celebrate this crazy moment in history out in the middle of the ocean.”
Though Oasis of the Seas will host this special eclipse-themed cruise, Royal Caribbean will have seven other ships sailing to the Caribbean that will offer partial eclipse views on Aug. 21: Allure of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Empress of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Majesty of the Seas. These ships will have great views of the event, along with their own celebrations and entertainment.
